Both were worked from depositions that had already been run and measured: the exports, the measurements and the note the operator wrote at the chamber.

Ten depositions, mapped as one process window, showed that the boundary between films that adhered and films that peeled follows ion energy. Stress did not separate them. The recommendation was a layered stack, with each required property served by a layer deposited in its own ion-energy range.
The recipe was copied setpoint for setpoint, and on the second machine the plated ABS parts came out with rainbow colours and peeling film. Both complaints turned out to be one defect: a fracture inside the coating. The recipe was putting far more carbon into the film than the chromium could bind, and the ions arrived below the energy a hard film needs. The recommendation was two runs that separate the plating, the line and the chamber before anyone touches the recipe.
